DDR4 vs DDR5: the key differences

→ RAM→ DDR4→ DDR5

Architecture and speed

The fundamental difference between these two memory technologies lies in their internal design. DDR4 uses a 64-bit data bus architecture, while DDR5 uses a 72-bit data bus architecture. This architectural difference lets DDR5 transfer more data simultaneously, for improved performance.

On speed, DDR5 substantially outpaces DDR4. While DDR4 tops out at 3200MHz, DDR5 can reach speeds up to 4800MHz — translating into shorter latency and improved overall system responsiveness.

Capacity

Memory capacity has also expanded significantly. DDR4 offers a maximum capacity of 128GB per module, while DDR5 modules can reach up to 512GB, better serving resource-intensive applications and heavy multitasking.

Power consumption and efficiency

DDR5 delivers stronger performance through faster data transfer rates, for quicker application loading and reduced response times — including for embedded autonomous systems, with lower thermal output.

On voltage, DDR5 runs at 1.1V nominal versus 1.2V for DDR4, resulting in reduced power consumption and lower thermal dissipation. DDR5 can also dynamically regulate voltage based on workload, making it well suited to power-sensitive devices like laptops and servers.

Compatibility and upgrade path

An important compatibility limitation exists between these technologies: DDR4 and DDR5 use different pins and memory slots, meaning they are not interchangeable. Upgrading from DDR4 to DDR5 requires a motherboard replacement, not simply a memory module swap.
